Detlef Schuppan, MD, PhD, is a founding Director of the Institute for Translational Immunology (TIM), and a Professor of Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology at the Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston. He is an international expert in the fields of fibrosis and celiac research, having published more than 440 Pubmed-cited articles. Notably, his work has led to the development of serum biomarkers of inflammatory processes and of liver fibrosis progression. He has also studied antifibrotic agents that could be used in combination with these biomarkers.

Prof. Schuppan received his medical degree in Berlin, Germany, and has earned two doctorate degrees from the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry in Munich and the Free University of Berlin, Germany. He is an associate editor of the American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, and an editorial board member of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
