Michael Roden, MD, is Professor and Chair of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at Heinrich-Heine University, Director of the Deutsches Diabetes Zentrum, and Director of the University Hospital Düsseldorf’s Division of Endocrinology and Diabetology. Among his contributions to the field, Prof. Roden shed new light on the mechanisms of nutrient-induced insulin resistance and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, for which he received the International Novartis Award (2004), ESCI-Award (2006), Oskar-Minkowski Prize (2006), Somogyi Award (2014), and Morgagni Gold Medal (2018). His other research interests include mitochondrial function, endocrine regulation, and the application of 13C-31P-1H NMR spectroscopy, and isotopic dilution techniques.

Prof. Roden is Head of the German Diabetes Study (GDS), a multicenter prospective study on diabetes mellitus launched by the German Center for Diabetes Research. Over the years, he has published more than 500 peer-reviewed papers, served on numerous editorial boards and is a past president of the Central European Diabetes Association and the Austrian Diabetes Association. He holds honorary degrees from the Universities of Athens and Belgrade.
